‘Joy ‘N Joy’: First National Consultation for children affected by HIV/AIDS in India

You are here: ‘Joy ‘N Joy’: First National Consultation for children affected by HIV/AIDS in India

24- 28 May 2006
Gurgaon, Delhi

The four-day consultation organized by PWN+ and supported by UNICEF was the first of its kind. It was a forum for children affected by HIV to share their experiences, concerns and feelings about the challenges they face.

Children are often the most affected by HIV/AIDS, but are given the least importance. The information gathered was to help strengthen the capacity of the PWN+ network to address the issues involved. These include neglect and inadequate food supply, social ostracism, separation from family and siblings, and even expulsion from schools.

The children were taken through a series of well-planned discussions, drawing sessions and role-play activities which helped give form to their concerns. Based on this, facilitators listed recommendations for the Third National AIDS Control Programme (NACP III).
